Western charm without the spicy scenes
Howdy. A lot of romance readers choose their books by point of view these days, so for this list of contemporary clean cowboy romance books, I’m noting whether each story is written in first person or third person. It feels like the polite thing to do, frankly. “Thank you kindly, ma’am,” he said, tipping his hat and being emotionally unavailable for at least three chapters.
I may not include POV notes in every single book list on this blog, but I’m feeling the western charm today. So here we are, boots dusted off, TBR ready, and preferences respected. If you tend to reach for first-person romance because you like being right inside the character’s head, or you prefer third person because it gives the story a little more room to breathe, I hope those notes help you choose your next read a little faster.
What Counts as a Clean Cowboy Romance?
The books on this list are contemporary cowboy romances with clean, sweet, or closed-door romance elements. In general, that means no explicit on-page scenes and no graphic content. If a book leans more toward closed-door, fade-to-black, or slightly higher swoon, I’ll note that where helpful, since every reader’s definition of “clean romance” can be a little different. But overall, this list is for readers looking for ranch settings, cowboy heroes, small-town charm, and western romance without the steam.
A beautifully written, first in a four-book series with three point-of-view characters, which is uncommon but it works. It’s written in the first person, and this western contemporary clean romance is all small-town family drama with secrets and suspense. Just how I like my cowboy books.
This is book three in a three-book series, written in the third person (good things come in 3s!) by the prolific Denise Hunter. The Big Sky romance series of course takes place in rugged Montana with strong cowboy heroes and has a nice, twisty plot. I really enjoyed this series. Also available in audio but unfortunately, not in Kindle Unlimited.
In this one, actress meets Wyoming dude ranch meets handsome cowboy meets comedy. It’s a Christian cowboy romance with well-illustrated fish out of water vibes. I thought it was cute, and it has a warm message about finding your real self.
A clean cowboy romance set in the 1980s, the first of three books in this small-town family saga. I haven’t actually read this one, but reviews call it aspirational and captivating. Written in the third person. And while it’s still considered contemporary, I love books that throw back to another era, even if it wasn’t that long ago.
Friends to lovers and marriage of convenience come together in this heartwarming Book Four in the series by Jean Oram. Closed-door with clean language and another cowboy veterinarian, this book is written in the third person and takes place in Texas. A solid series for sure.
Written in the first person, this sweet romance centers on the chemistry between a woman starting fresh at a Texas winery and her grumpy cowboy boss. A romcom with forced proximity and grumpy~sunshine layers.
It’s hard not to fall in love with Pete in this one. Written in first-person POV with a knight-in-shining-armor hero.
This one is sweet and funny and written in the first person. Brother’s best friend and single dad tropes collide. Worth the read if you’re a fan of romcom.
A kisses-only, Christian cowboy romance with fake dating and humor, this one delivers a nice faith-based yet comical punch. Book One of an eight-book romcom series. First-person POV.
Third-person POV story with grumpy~sunshine rays, this one has a bit of mystery and lots of small-town family vibes. First in the Clayborne Cowboy Cousins series by prolific author Ciara Knight.
Elements of romantic suspense and plenty of found family, this is Book One in a six-book series by Danae Little, which I love, called Hope Lake. It’s written in third-person POV with protective cowboy heroes and plenty of heart-tugging emotion.
Excellent and realistic world building in this one. Book One of a six-book clean cowboy romance series by author Debra Chapoton, I don’t love the cover font, but the writing feels extremely authentic for a western book in terms of the setting and characters. Slow-burn love and redemption are themes.
Heartwarming and sweet. And as this book stands for now, it’s a standalone title, but full of heart. Written in the first-person POV, and the introduction mentions that the writer’s first language is not English so there will be grammatical errors. Still, the book has been well-received, especially for a book not in a series. I do love this cover. This one is listed as closed-door romance.
Gripping and realistic, this second-chance romance is written in the third person. Book Two in the series by USA Today Bestselling author April Murdock, I’d suggest starting with Book One if you haven’t read it because of all the family and sister elements in the books.
